Pour ce projet, le producteur Hal Willner a voulu faire revivre les classiques de la chanson folk évoquant la mer et les chants traditionnels de marins, grâce à des reprises d'artistes capables d'y injecter leur style personnel. Ce projet ambitieux a été confié aux plus grands noms de la musique, d'Iggy Pop à Patti Smith en passant par Michael Stipe et Broken Social Scene.
